This exhibition accompanied the opening of the Foundation's research
archive on Münsterplatz, Basel, in April 1986 and offered an
initial glimpse into its rich manuscript holdings. Several manuscripts
from earlier centuries in the Paul Sacher Collection were placed
on display alongside others by contemporary composers. In a parade
of generations, Johann Sebastian Bach and Joseph Haydn rubbed shoulders
with, among others, Béla Bartók, Alban Berg, Arthur
Honegger, Arnold Schoenberg, and Richard Strauss as well as more
recent composers such as Henri Dutilleux, Cristóbal Halffter,
Hans Werner Henze, Heinz Holliger, Klaus Huber, Rudolf Kelterborn,
and Wolfgang Rihm. Detailed documentation was provided for composers
already represented at the Foundation by their own collections:
Conrad Beck, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Bruno Maderna, Frank
Martin, Igor Stravinsky, and Anton Webern.
