Holligers Walser

Hommage to Heinz Holliger

06.02.2014

From February to April 2014 a new production of Heinz Holliger's Schneewittchen (1997-98) was shown at the Theater Basel. The composer himself conducted the work in a staging by Achim Freyer.

The Paul Sacher Foundation used the occasion to mount an exhibition in the theater's foyer, displaying documents from their own Heinz Holliger Collection and items on loan from the Robert Walser Center. The displays shed light on the genesis of the opera and on Holliger's other major Walser composition, the song cycle Beiseit (1990-91).

A booklet edited by Heidy Zimmermann further probes the subject of Holliger's Walser. It contains an interview with Heinz Holliger, conducted by the editor, as well as essays by Wolfram Groddeck, Doris Lanz and Jürg Stenzl and many illustrations. See publications

Heinz Holliger celebrated his 75th birthday in May 2014. As a tribute, a concert was held in his honour on 25 February 2014. The centrepiece was Holliger's Beiseit, flanked by solo works from, among others, Elliott Carter and Pierre Boulez. (A co-production of the Paul Sacher Foundation and Theater Basel.)
